Three Public Utilities Advisory Committee Members Honored

December 20, 1999

At the Public Utilities Advisory Committee meeting held on December 9, 1999 three members of the Committee were honored for their dedicated service and completion of their terms of office. Pictured from left to right: Sharon Walkington, business person and member of the League of Women Voters (served as chair of the committee for the past 3 years); Patricia A. Richards, banking executive; and Mark Bauer, retired Detroit automobile executive, were recognized for their 8 years of service.

In a resolution, Mayor Deedee Corradini expressed her appreciation for their participation in serving the customers of Salt Lake City's Department of Public Utilities:

Whereas, Salt Lake City Corporation encourages and values citizen participation through Boards and Commissions; and

Whereas, the Public Utilities Advisory Committee has been formed under Section 2.40 of the Salt Lake City Code; and

Whereas, the Public Utilities Advisory Committee has the power and duty to annually review the department of Public Utilities' capital improvements program; annual operations and maintenance budget and expenditures; recommend rate adjustments; review and make recommendations on proposed legislation; consult with the Mayor relative to water resources and sewage reclamation requirements; and to adopt and alter rules and regulations in the public interest to advance, enhance, foster and promote the public utilities systems of Salt Lake City and its utility service area; and

Whereas, each member of the Public Utilities Advisory Committee is appointed by the Mayor of Salt Lake City and confirmed by the City Council to act as a member of this committee and to serve on a voluntary basis without compensation, and to perform faithfully, honestly and impartially the duties of his or her office, and

Whereas, Sharon Walkington, Patricia Richards and Mark Bauer have served on the Public Utilities Advisory Committee, and have dutifully severed the citizens of Salt Lake City Public Utilities' service area;

Now therefore, with deep gratitude and appreciation, I Deedee Corradini, Mayor of Salt Lake City, by this resolution express the appreciation of Salt Lake City to Sharon Walkington, Patricia Richards and Mark Bauer for their exemplary contribution to the duties and goals of the Department of Public Utilities.

Signed Mayor Deedee Corradini

LeRoy W. Hooton, Jr. expressed his appreciation to the members, noting that having a citizens committee oversee the department has been an invaluable contribution to the department's success.

Patricia Richards spoke, "I'd like to thank the staff and fellow members of the committee for a wonderful experience, and I've really learned an awful lot and hope that I've contributed just a little bit."

Mark Bauer said, " My appreciation for the experience and the complexity of the subject matter diminished considerably because of the people that are involved, that I've had a chance to associate with."

Sharon Walkington, concluded by saying, "I wondered eight years ago whether my interest to be a sewer boss and a water person, if I was going to be challenged by the professional people that I was going to work with, as well as the Advisory Board. I found that I was completely in compliance with what they desired and what I desired. I've been very very pleased, very interested and I couldn't have had a better experience in meeting very professional people who have the same high standards and goals that I think pubic utilities should have."

Mr. Hooton again thanked the three members for their service and presented them with the photos taken of them at the beginning of their terms 8 years ago, noting that they appeared younger today. He expressed his hope that they would continue to remember the Department of Public Utilities into the future.
