Normal Water Year Predicted

April 23, 1999

Dan Schenck, Public Utilities Hydrologist, told the Public Utilities Advisory Committee at their April 22 meeting that the 1999 water supply will be about normal. "Snowpack data is currently showing 80 to 85 percent of normal for the Wasatch Front drainage," said Mr. Schenck. He quipped that this is the first year since holding his position that based on 76 years of data, the spring run-off and water supply will be about normal. "With 1999 preceded by some very wet years, our soil moisture is relatively high which should cause our runoff volumes to be very close to normal," he added.

Mr. Schenck continued, "Reservoir storage is excellent this year with Jordanelle, Deer Creek, Little Dell and Mt. Dell all are expected to fill."

Utah Lake, the source of water Salt Lake City uses to meet its exchange agreements is 0.32 feet above compromise and will provide water right holders in the lake their full share of water.

He concluded by saying, "With perhaps a drier weather regime, water consumption may be up this coming summer."
