New Chlorination System for the
City Creek Water Treatment Plant
May 23, 1998
A new chlorination system has been installed at the City Creek Water Treatment
Plant located 3-miles up City Creek Canyon. After using chlorine gas
since the plant's construction in 1953, Salt Lake City has installed a new
system that converts plain salt to sodium hypochlorite to disinfect the
treated water. The process costs less than conventional chlorine gas and
is safer to transport, store and use.

in the chemical feeding building. The new system was installed during
the spring of 1998. The first thing the operators noticed is that
the treatment plant no longer smells like a swimming pool. The application
of hypochlorite is as effective in disinfection as chlorine gas.
